Come out to this long running celebration of cultural diversity on the beautiful Portsmouth Waterfront. Umoja is the Swahili word for unity, and each year, the Umoja Festival celebrates African-American culture and demonstrates the unifying power of music, heritage, food, friendship and community. Bring the whole family to enjoy live musical performances, international foods, a market of handcrafted jewelry and art, workshops, arts & crafts, ancient traditions, fun activities for the kids, and more!
Embark on our African American Heritage Tour to the Portsmouth Colored Community Library Museum. Discover its history as the city's segregation-era library for African Americans. Experience the Art is Revolutionary exhibit celebrating local icons, then enjoy a back-porch concert by Kenise Butler honoring Ella Fitzgerald. Tours are 1 hour and depart from Crawford Street, in front of City Hall, Saturday 5/25 at 2, 3, and 4p.m.
The festival and all performances are free and open to the public, with the exception of the R&B Money Tour, a ticketed event at the adjacent Atlantic Union Bank Pavilion.
