Recovery Efforts Underway After Car Drives Off of 14th Street Fishing Pier

Police are still working to recover the car and any potential people in it after it was caught on camera driving on the 14th street fishing pier and before falling over Saturday morning. In what is now considered a possible suicide, police say recovering the vehicle has been tougher than people think. Sgt. Brian Ricardo with the Virginia Beach Police Department (VBPD) Special Operations says the first attempt "broke two bridles that hold their cranes in place and they snapped a mooring line from the crane barge onto their dive boat.” This was due to violent waves. A side-scan sonar located the car right off of the pier at the bottom of the ocean on its roof which is about 17-ft deep.

A crew with Crofton Diving Corporation will determine when it is safe to try again to recover the vehicle.
